<p>You are not looking for help you are looking for talent. You are looking for energy, enthusiasm and integrity. You want  the best candidates applying for the position.</p>
<p>If it&#8217;s a receptionist position you are looking for, then you want a receptionist with a great voice, who smiles every time the phone rings before she ever picks up the phone to see who is calling.</p>
<p>If it&#8217;s a sales position you are looking for, then you want a likeable, coachable, pursuasive candidate who can handle objections, close the sale and follow up while asking for referrals.</p>
<p>When writing ads ask for what you want. Place the ads in publications closely relating to the type of position you are are creating an opportunity for.</p>
<p>For example -</p>
<ul>
<li>Sales Manager Position (see my page for writing great ads) should be in a sports publication. Most managers need to coach and motivate their team just like a coach in sports.</li>

<p>I was driving home the other day and I thought &#8220;how does one become a leader&#8221; So I thought about what a leader should do and what abilities they posses. I then took another look at how does one evolve into a leadership role, this is what I came up with:</p>
<ul>
<li>Lack of Decision Makers-</li>
</ul>
<p>There is no leadership when no one can make a decision or the decision makers are away from the office. <strong>Be a Decision Maker</strong>.</p>
<ul>
<li>Lack of a Clear Vision</li>
</ul>
<p>When one has a clear vision of what they want and can communicate that vision, you have a leader. <strong>Have a Clear Vision.</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Knowing what is right</li>
</ul>
<p>Knowing the difference between right and wrong is an ingredient to becoming a leader.</p>
<ul>
<li>Doing the Right Thing</li>
</ul>
<p>Knowing right from wrong can be different than doing the right thing. Doing the right thing may go against your beliefs but it&#8217;s the right thing.</p>
<p>An example might be a customer who is wrong and you know they&#8217;re wrong but they think they&#8217;re right. You want to make the customer happy so you do the right thing in order to get a referral even though it&#8217;s not right.</p>

<p>Busy is when temporary outside circumstances cause you to react to the marketplace, while growing your business is a cause of your actions regardless of marketplace conditions.</p>
<p>Almost every business owner is optimistic and wants to grow. Depending on the type of business and industry you are in you must look at trends from previous quarter sales. You may have to go back several quarters to determine are you in a busy cycle or are you truly growing. Chart out the last 24 months of <strong>sales</strong> and determine is the chart line in an upward trend, sideways trend or a downward trend.</p>
<p>Ask yourself this question &#8211; why did my sales go up?</p>
<ul>
<li>if the answer is outside influences acting positively (one big sale, economic boom, lowering interest rates) you&#8217;re probably busy.</li>
<li>if the answer is internal influences acting positively (sales training, advertising, diversifying) you&#8217;re probably growing.</li>
</ul>
<p>Knowing the difference will help you make better decisions for the future and viability of your company.</p>

That was my question to a client I started working with. This client was overwhelmed with how much he didn&#8217;t know about running his business. Sure he made money through the years but now the kids are all grown up and he can really concentrate on his business. Although he has been in business for over 3 decades he was ready to take his company to the next level. The level where he works on his business, not in his business. To this point he was the owner, sales rep, marketing rep, office manager, accounting manager and bill collector. This client realized he can&#8217;t do it all and be as successful as he wanted to be. He did the right thing by consulting with a business coach. He&#8217;s in the process of learning key strategic objectives and if he just takes small bites and sets short and long term goals that are measurable over time, he can eat an elephant.</p>
